So long and thanks for all the polls
When I started this site in October 2008, it was out of my admiration for the work that was being done by Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight during that year's U.S. presidential election. His site sparked a passion for political polling, election forecasts and psephology in me — and it has now become my full-time work.
After developing this site from amateurish to slightly-less-amateurish, I was lucky enough to secure regular freelance work with The Globe and Mail and The Hill Times in 2010 and The Huffington Post Canada in 2011, as well as election-related work with some French-language media outlets.
Things changed in 2014 when I begin working with the CBC in the run-up to the 2015 federal election. Since the beginning of that campaign I've been working out of the newsroom with the Parliamentary Bureau in Ottawa.
It's been a life-changing move, as well as an honour and an inspiration to work with such a talented and professional group of journalists every day.
Now, regular readers might have noticed that the activity on this site has died down in recent months. My work with the CBC has curtailed the time I've been able to invest in this website.
But now that I have accepted a full-time position with the Parliamentary Bureau, the time has come to cease operations of this site.
I hope readers will continue following my work with the CBC. In addition to your local CBC radio and television stations and CBC News Network, here is where you can find me:
- You can find my most recent articles and work here, as well as on the CBC Politics page.
- You can subscribe to my podcast, The Pollcast, here, and you can find and stream all of the episodes here.
ThreeHundredEight.com will be kept online and accessible as an archive and a reference, but it will no longer be updated.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my readers over the last nine years. Thank you for visiting ThreeHundredEight.com, for giving me your support and encouragement, for keeping me accountable and always striving to get better.
I've loved this site, but it is now time to move on to the next chapter. I'm excited about it.
Congrats and best of luck!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on this Eric. Thanks for the great stuff over the past years, it is really appreciated.
ReplyDeleteIt's been ab absolute pleasure following this site since about 2011, when I first got interested in polling, and I hope you continue to produce the excellent analysis and projections at CBC, as I know you will, good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Eric. I have learned a lot here and hope you go on doing your fine work at the CBC. Please !!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to see this site go ,it has become my favourite place to check polls as it has been very accurate, easy to understand and rich with info. However CBC is my favourite news so I won't have to look far to find out what I need to know. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThanks Eric for your work, and good luck on your future projects! Will continue to listen to you on the pollcast!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your work covering Canadian politics. Best of luck to you at CBC!
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect, your readers were better off
ReplyDeletewith you as independent journalist rather than a full fledged member of the Liberal shill club over at the CBC. Hopefully you'll rise above that and report the truth rather than "The Narrative"
Did you try to sell the site? The site and aggregation methodology must be worth something. I'm not aware of a competitor in the Canadian marketplace.
ReplyDeleteI'm still using my methodology for my CBC analyses and Poll Trackers.
DeleteI don't understand, I go to the CBC links, nothing there is clearly laid out like it was here, as far as polls from every province and the federal. There is only British Columbia stuff there. What about the rest of the country??
DeleteWell done Eric. Nice to see all your hard work pay off.
ReplyDeleteWell, it has been a slice. I will miss the frequent updates on the state of federal politics between elections. I hope another site emerges to keep track of polls. Hopefully the C.B.C. will fill some of the void.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your hard work Eric and best of luck in the future!
Thank you very much, Eric! Having followed this blog since a few weeks after it started, I've been so impressed by all of the excellent work that you have put into it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, thank you to all of the commenters and contributors; this has been such a much better forum for discussing Canadian politics than anywhere else, with many, many thoughtful contributors.
I learned a lot on this site and will miss it.
Good bye!
I was very active here at one time but have been quiet lately as life took over (single parent, 2 kids at home, 2 moved out). Thank you Eric for providing a spot to let out political and statistical issues that were on my mind at times in the past. Good luck with the full time job.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see your site go; thanks for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the polls indeed! I hope the CBC will continue with a provincial/ federal poll site between elections.
ReplyDeleteThank you to all my fellow commentators as well. 308 was one of the best blogs to converse on Canadian politics.
Good Luck Eric and everyone else!
But your polls were the most accurate :(
ReplyDeleteIt's a big loss, but best of luck to you.
Éric,
ReplyDeleteGoodbye, Good Luck and Thank you for your excellent work!
Pour tes lecteurs, c'est au revoir, ce n'est pas adieu.
Félicitation! Eric. Canada's amateur political-watchers will miss your analyses. It's been fun! À la prochaine.
ReplyDeleteI will miss the clear methodology and comments. Is there a link where we can follow you without blundering through the CBC nonsense?
ReplyDeleteThe first link I provided (with "recent articles" in bold) contains all of my work for the CBC. But the rest isn't nonsense!
DeleteThanks to everyone for their kind words.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your hard work over the years. Where can we go for your aggregated provincial poll numbers?
ReplyDeleteAll the best Eric! I've been silently following for many years and want to say thanks! This site has been a great resource and on the selfish side, I will miss it. I'll be sure to continue reading your work though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing such a good source of information over the years. Congratulations on your new position at the CBC.
ReplyDeleteI will miss this very informative site, but look forward to all your work with CBC. You are becoming my go to person for political analysis!
ReplyDeleteall the best!! amazing site. hopefully a new one comes online. but my question is why could it not be sold and continued?!
ReplyDeleteI have followed this site for years! It was wonderful! Good luck in all your future endeavours!
ReplyDeleteI for one welcome our new CBC overlords. Or something.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new job, Eric, and I for one will definitely be continuing to read you there.
Thanks Eric. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the CBC for signing up a top talent.
ReplyDeleteThank you Eric for your very fine work. I look forward to continuing to see your insights from the parliamentary Bureau.
Most unfortunate to hear, I find this site much more straightforward and user-friendly than the CBC's presentation of your data. Will miss 308.com but the CBC has certainly lucked out having you come aboard. Bonne chance!
ReplyDeleteWill you be posting your riding by rinding projections for the poll takers on CBC now?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new post, and thanks for all the work you've put in on this site over the years. I always love your sense of perspective. CBC are very lucky (don't let them forget it!) Bonne chance!
ReplyDeleteIs there any interest in an ongoing site to discuss Canadian Politics ???

Congrats. Thanks for your work.
ReplyDeleteI must say that I find this site much more friendly than the CBC site for finding what I am interested in. If you can find a way to import as much as possible to the CBC site, it would be gratly appreciated. Godd for the CBC--though I hope they allow you ample room for your creative genius.
Do you have a protégé or someone you trust with your methodology? Unfortunately the CBC doesn't have the aggregates for the federal and every provincial poll like you have them here. It would be nice to have those models continue somewhere if CBC won't publish them.
ReplyDeleteComme les autres je veux te donner mes felicitations avec votre emploi Éric!
Amen
DeleteWell that's disappointing. I much preferred your pre-CBC style. Your posts were more in-depth and, frankly, nerdier, which is what I want to read.
ReplyDeleteMaybe your career path with follow Nate Silver's and you'll have to go independent again when your projections don't please your bosses (as he did when the NYT cut him loose for correctly predicting GOP wins).
Congrats, and thanks Eric, never comment but have been coming to your blog for years. Will miss having this tool, but am happy that you will at least be continuing to provide updates on CBC :)
ReplyDeleteÉric, resist the temptation to be just a pundit. Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new position Eric, and best of luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for everything, Eric, it has been a pleasure coming to your site regularly. Best of luck in all future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I am selfishly sad to see this site go, but so grateful for the years of work you put into making it a wonderful place to learn and discuss. Thank you.
I'm sad to read your news, but happy that you are doing what's best for you. Good luck!
